Ciò che rende speciale una foresta è la sua ricchezza: la vita si è sviluppata in un caleidoscopio di forme e colori, in una corsa agli armamenti messa in atto da predatori e prede, parassiti e simbionti fino a esplorare una gamma impressionante di nicchie e adattamenti ecologici. Nelle foreste vivono organismi diversissimi eppure perfettamente interconnessi, come ingranaggi di uno strumento ad alta precisione.
La parola chiave è biodiversità. Le foreste  tropicali sono i templi della biodiversità del pianeta Terra o, per meglio dire, gli archivi primari della ricchezza e varietà della vita biologica terrestre.
Sono anche i polmoni del pianeta, grazie alla loro elevata capacità di diffondere ossigeno in atmosfera. Senza il loro apporto, l’aria sarebbe molto meno respirabile sulla Terra.
