Let's start with introductions
Erythrina peoppigiana, or, as it is locally called, "cambulo", is a blooming plant species belonging to the Erythrina genus that is native to northern and western South America. Its striking orange flowers have led to its use as an ornamental plant along the streets. However, it is also of ecological value: in fact, cambulo strengthens the soil and stores a large amount of CO2 during its lifetime. What is more, it is home to many native bird species.
Meaning
Protection
The beauty of the mountain immortelle conceals a danger: all Erythrina species contain toxic alkaloids, mainly concentrated in the seeds. In large quantities, these are lethal, so the cambulo is not edible under any circumstances.
