The Forest
Sea Kayak Oban is using its 1% for the planet in 2022 to support the soil reconstruction and tree species restoration of deforested areas in Madagascar. The Acacia Mangium has been chosen because it is particularly good at absorbing and processing nitrogen in exhausted soils. It is quick growing so creates a natural canopy for more delicate native species to begin to thrive under its protection. We hope these will be planted as part of linking corridors to reconnect belts of natural forest allowing birds and insects safe passage between what little habitat there is left to allow the start of regeneration of these species. Also in 2022 we are supporting projects here in Scotland including a native species tree nursery project with our local primary school and sponsoring the replanting of Seagrass species 'Zoster Marina' in Loch Craignish.
Impact
The trees we plant have big ambitions: to bring benefits not only to the environment, but also to the people who live in it. That's why we work with NGOs and local communities to select the right tree for the right place and the right purpose. That’s why we think about the medium and long term, because we’re not content with simply planting trees: we want to see them grow.
