Haiti is not one of our current markets. We have no commercial interests in Port-au-Prince. Yet Haiti can become a symbol of hope and rebirth for all of us. Coming in the wake of a long period of political crisis, the 2010 earthquake hit Haiti hard. Four years on, the emergency has yet to end and poverty is widespread.
Haiti is now the setting for Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo&rsquo;s latest environmental effort. We aim to combat the degradation and destruction of the country&rsquo;s forests, which today cover only 2% of its surface area. In our plan to provide local farmers with recovery opportunities, we have adopted a 150-tree orchard. It will be planted this Christmas as part of a chain of value that will bring assistance to a considerable number of families. Crucially, our orchard will show that an environment-friendly economic and social development model is possible. Once again.

Good wine is born in the vineyard and only in a healthy environment will vines thrive and give their best fruits. Over the years, these observations of nature have inspired every environmental or sustainability policy adopted by Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo, one of Italy&rsquo;s leading wine players and a group with a global reputation. Our ecological focus has a long history, dating back to our first Alto Adige plant protection protocols to definitively reduce the presence of chemicals in our vineyards.
Several decades have passed during which we have carried forward projects to safeguard biodiversity in and around our vineyards; to promote rational, waste-free water consumption; to secure total energy self-production from renewable solar and biomass sources; and to gain carbon-neutrality certification for a significant proportion of our exports, which has involved investments in reforestation, ecofuel and energy from renewable sources. In our eighty-year history, we have always combined safeguarding the environment with the utmost attention to social sustainability, defending workers and the dignity of work all along our production chain.
