Der Wald Giro-E is a unique e-bike experience in the world, taking place on the days and roads of the Giro d’Italia. Organised by RCS Sport, it is a cycling event on the calendar of the Italian Cycling Federation. Its first edition was in 2019. Open only to e-bikes, which allow normally trained cyclists to tackle the climbs usually reserved for champions, the event gives all cycling enthusiasts the experience of the Corsa Rosa, as it tracks its route. The 2024 edition includes 20 stages, with a daily distance of between 50 and 85 kilometres. The time trial stages are also held, which in the Giro-E become regularity tests. In the stage finale, however, the team captains are engaged in the “performing” sprint test before the finish line. The Giro-E takes place only and exclusively with pedal-assisted racing bikes (e-road bikes) that are homologated, with 250W motors for a maximum speed limited to 25 km/h and are provided by the Teams. The stage finish is set before the finish line of the Giro d’Italia but under the same arch, and the award ceremony is held on the same podium as the professionals. At each stage finish a VIP hospitality – an exclusive and dedicated area – is set in a unique location near the finish arch of the Giro d’Italia. Here, all participants find some refreshments and have the opportunity to watch the arrival of the professional riders of the Corsa Rosa. One of its goals is to raise public awareness of sustainable mobility and all environmental sustainability-related issues, also through the new “Sustainability Village” that will follow the Giro-E in all the start cities.
